County Treasurer

Our Responsibilities

The County Treasurer collects, records, and distributes County Tax Revenue. The Treasurer also accepts payment for County Solid Waste Bills. The Treasurer’s office as well as the County Clerk’s Office accepts major credit and debit card payments with a small service fee. The Mora County Treasurer’s Office is responsible for collecting property tax, solid waste payments and miscellaneous county fees. It is our mission to faithfully execute the duties of the Treasurer and to stay in compliance with all New Mexico State Statutes and all New Mexico Taxation & Revenue Department and Property Tax Division rules and regulations. The Treasurer’s Office receives assessed valuation, the tax rate and the amount of taxes due from the Assessor’s office and has an obligaton to collect all taxes and fees owed on personal and real property in Mora County.

Property tax bills are mailed out by November 1st of each year. The first half payment is due November 10th and becomes delinquent if payment is not received or post marked on or before December 10th. The second half payment is due April 10th and becomes delinquent if the payment is not received or post marked by May 10th. Pursuant to Section 7-38-49 and 50 NMSA 1978, if property taxes become delinquent, a 1% penalty shall be imposed, but the total penalty shall not exceed 5%. For your convenience you can pay by check, money order, cash and for a small fee you can also use your credit or debit card. PROPERTY TAXES ARE THE PERSONAL OBLIGATION OF THE PERSON OWNING THE PROPERTY. It is the tax payer’s responsibility to pay taxes even if they did not receive a tax bill.

A delinquent property tax list is sent to the New Mexico Taxation & Revenue Department for collection and possible property tax auction after that time. A cost to state fee of $125.00 is added to the amount due. The FULL AMOUNT due must be paid to be removed from the list. New Mexico Property Tax Division conducts auctions periodically.
